Former Washington DC Mayor and city council member, Marion Barry has died at the age of 78. The four term DC Mayor Marion was labeled as an “infamous drug addict,” stemming from a 1990 arrest but that would not be his legacy. Adored by many Washingtonians, DC residents remember Marion Barry as the most powerful politician of his generation. He was a graduate of Yale and [Barry], a tireless advocate for the poor and middle class, and credited with giving government jobs to Blacks that were often reserved for Whites. For more than 40 years, Barry served as a well respected leader in the struggle for Civil Rights.
To many , Barry was fair; a man of power and delivered consistent results.

According to a spokeswoman for Mr. Barry, he died a few hours after being released from Howard University Hospital following a brief stay. No cause was given, but he had suffered from many health problems over the years, including diabetes, prostate cancer and kidney ailments.”
In 2008, Barry was memorialized in a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Washington DC to many supporters.
